Helping Kids Feel Comfortable with Drawing Mistakes

Best Drawing Books · Published October 8, 2026 · 2 min read

Drawing mistakes can feel surprisingly important to a child. A line that goes farther than intended may seem to spoil an entire picture. Parents can use a cartoon activity to explore several responses: adjust the line, turn it into a new feature, leave it alone, or try again. No single response needs to be required every time.

Ask before offering a repair

When a child points out an unwanted mark, ask whether they want to change it or simply tell you about it. Adults often jump straight to an eraser or a clever transformation. The child may need a moment to feel disappointed first. Giving them a choice keeps the picture theirs and prevents reassurance from becoming another instruction they must follow.

Demonstrate flexibility on your own page

Make a separate drawing and let a small unexpected mark remain visible. You might adapt it into a detail or explain why you are leaving it. Do not deliberately damage the child's drawing to create a teaching moment. A casual example of your own decision can show that drawing involves choices without turning their work into an exercise about resilience.

Use invented creatures to explore alternatives

An imaginary character does not have to follow the proportions of a real animal. On a second sheet, invite your child to create a variation with different eyes, a longer body, or an unusual accessory. Keep the book lesson available as a reference while explaining that this new version is an independent invention. That distinction gives space for both guided practice and experimentation.

Meet an intentionally peculiar cast

How to Draw: Crusty Goobers features original cartoon creatures by Kevin Coulston in the six-step drawing format. The ages 5+ guidance and dedicated practice page give beginners a clear sequence, while the unusual theme provides a natural bridge into inventing their own creature variations. You can follow the reference first and reserve a separate sheet for an imagined character inspired by the experience.

Should children erase mistakes?

They can if they want to. An eraser is one option, not a requirement or a failure. Leaving a mark, adapting it, and beginning again are also valid choices in a drawing activity.
