Problem-Solving Drawing Activities for Kids
Best Drawing Books · Published October 8, 2026 · 2 min read
Problem-solving drawing activities give children a small challenge with several possible approaches. A feature might not fit in the space left on the page, or a line might be difficult to connect. Step-by-step lessons provide a reference children can consult while deciding what to do next, rather than leaving them with an entirely undefined task.
Identify the drawing problem clearly
Ask your child to describe or point to the part they want to change. Is there too little room, a missing connection, or uncertainty about the next stage? Those are different problems and may need different responses. Avoid treating every difference from the reference as a problem. The child should have a say in which changes are important to them.
Brainstorm more than one next move
For a part that does not fit, possibilities include making it smaller, extending the drawing onto spare paper, adapting the design, or starting a larger version. Discuss two choices and let your child select one. They do not need to choose the option you would pick. Making and testing a decision is the useful part of this extension.
Look back at the result
After trying their solution, ask whether it did what they wanted. If not, the next step can be another adjustment or a pause. This simple reflection keeps attention on the process instead of labeling the child as naturally good or bad at solving problems. It also helps them explain their own drawing decisions in concrete terms.
Use a science-fiction character as the project
How to Draw: Alien Cyborgs brings an imaginative alien-and-mechanical theme to the six-stage How to Draw series. Designed for ages 5+, it includes a dedicated drawing page for practicing each character. Follow a chosen lesson, then use separate paper to invent a modification or solve a placement challenge. The book supplies the reference; the optional problem-solving discussion comes from how you use it together.
Does a drawing book teach general problem-solving?
It provides opportunities to make decisions within a drawing task. That does not establish improvements in unrelated school subjects. Keep the activity focused on specific choices the child can see and discuss.
