Ages 3–4: begin with a line to follow
For a younger child, a tracing and coloring book can make the first mark less intimidating. The Trace Then Color series is intended for ages 3 and up. Look for a familiar subject, such as baby animals, cartoon dinosaurs, or robots, then let the child color the character however they like. A 3-year-old and a 4-year-old can enjoy the same book at different paces.
Ages 5–6: try a sequence
If you are looking for drawing books for 5-year-olds or 6-year-olds, consider whether the child enjoys following instructions. How to Draw books show each character in six steps and give them room to draw. A five-year-old may want an adult to work alongside them; a six-year-old might use the steps more independently. The series is intended for ages 5 and up.
Ages 7–8: follow their interests
Drawing books for 7-year-olds and 8-year-olds can offer more choice in method.
